Sailing the Islands of Greece

With a coastline that extends to greater than 8.000 miles and over 1,000 islands to explore, Greece is one of the top destinations around the world for touring with a luxury yacht charter.

For those that intend to sail the beautiful coastal waters of the country, the following are a few of the best islands to take in.

This is the largest of the Cyclades island group and offers plenty for visitors to enjoy.

A trip to Mt. Zeus in the center of Naxos provides the chance to spend some time relaxing in traditional Greek villages such as Apiranthos.

Alternatively, take a walk around the cobbled streets of the main city, Hora, and relax at a cafe to enjoy the views out over the water.

Santorini has a number of attractions to make it a worthwhile stopping off point. The tranquil waters around the island are perfect for a scuba diving expedition and once on dry land there is the chance to visit the ancient city of Akrotiri.

The end of the day on Santorini can only be spent in one way, with a trip to Oia Castle providing the chance to take in a spectacular sunset.

The history of this destination makes it a great destination and the fact that it is uninhabited means you just might get the entire island to yourself. It was the location where Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was held hostage by pirates during his youth.

It took a year for a ransom to be paid and in an act of revenge when he became a general; Caesar had the entire population of the island crucified. It remains uninhabited to this day and is a historic location to enjoy some peace and quiet.

If quiet is not your thing and you want to enjoy the party life, Mykonos is the destination to head for in Greece. There are plenty of clubs to choose from, with many of these located on the beaches around the island so that revelers can dance the night away on the sand.

Many of the clubs attract top DJs from around the world and this guarantees some of the best sounds. Away from the party scene the island offers plenty of other attractions, with the Paraportiani Church and Armenistis Lighthouse a couple of the landmark attractions.

Touring the islands of Greece can be a great adventure for any sailor to enjoy.

Those that choose to do this should consider some of the destinations shown above for their ports of call while there.
